Welcome Back

Welcome back to everyone. We have once again had a fabulous beginning to the school term.

We started our term with two intensive days of the IB PYP training with the focus being on inquiry learning and tools to delve deeply into students understanding. The staff have already incorporated many of the ideas into their teaching and learning sessions.

We have also had Caroline Fogiel who is currently teaching in Shanghai however is moving into the role as PYP whole school curriculum coordinator, overseeing also the Primary section of a school in Oman. Caroline has been keen to build her knowledge of the implementation of PYP in the primary years. She has visited classrooms and planning sessions to build her knowledge of the practice in a primary setting. Caroline has enjoyed her time at the school commenting on the friendly and professional attitude of all staff.

We would like to welcome back Gail Petta who has returned from leave. Also next week in the office we have two new members in the team, Trish White and Dee Healy. They are very excited about joining our team and look forward to meeting you when you visit the office. We also welcome back Amanda McAuslan and Pam McNamara who are both returning from leave. Amanda is teaching art Monday and Tuesday and Pam has joined the Year 4 team.

Junior School Sports Day

This day was a huge success thanks to the organisation by Dylan Hislop and Peter Scarfo. The day ran smoothly and the weather was beautiful for most of the time the students were there. Our Year 6 sports captains did an outstanding job mentoring our younger students and encouraging them continually.

Bentleigh Secondary College

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have the Bentleigh Secondary band visit and play for our Year 2 – 6 students.
Our Stage band also performed and all students and teachers were tapping their toes. Thank you to Mr Minshull for organising.

Sister School Visit

On Monday 3 teachers and 20 students from our sister school in Changzhou, China arrived. We were very excited to host our friends again. Special thanks to the McKinnon families who are currently host our visitor in their homes. We are very grateful that our community supports this ongoing relationship with our sister-school.

Congratulations

Congratulation to Jeff Klyne and his wife Robyn on the arrival of baby Alfie. We would also like to congratulate Mr Moncrieff and his wife on the arrival of their son. Both babies are doing very well.
Parent Survey

We are conducting a survey to find out what you think of our school. This helps us celebrate the success and identify improvement areas to target in the future.

The Parent Opinion Survey is completed annually by the Department of Education and Training and is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at every school in Victoria. This year, about 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate.  All responses to the survey are anonymous.

The survey helps our school gain an understanding of how you view our school climate, student engagement, and relationships. Our school will use the results to inform school planning and improvement strategies.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.

The survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi.

Results will be sent back to our school at the end of September. If you are one of the families who receive the survey please fill it in at your earliest convenience before 27th August. We value your voice and look forward to reviewing the data.

New Building and Facilities
This week we opened our new toilet block on the Eastern Campus. The students have commented on how new and exciting the new building is and said they couldn’t wait to use it. Over the holiday we also had a new fence erected on the Moylan Street side of the Eastern Campus.

Working Bee
Last Saturday several parents and students attend our first Working Bee for 2017. Thanks to Mark Pountley and Mark Henery for organising and to our volunteers who turned up to assist completing jobs around our school.

Education Sub-Committee and Policy Review
Education Sub-committee meetings are open to the school community and we welcome parents to attend any of the listed Education Sub-committee meetings.

Part of our role as the Education Sub-Committee is to review policies and canvass views of the community. At the coming August meeting we will be reviewing the following policies: Allergy Policy, First-Aid Policy and Parent Complaints. You will find these policies in DRAFT form attached to this newsletter post.

If you would like to attend, our next meeting will be held in the Learning Centre on Tuesday 1st August at 8am.  Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there.

NCCD Data Collection
Over the next few weeks our school will be collecting the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. This is a joint initiative of all Australian governments and government and non-government education authorities. National data is collected annually to identify the number of school students with disability at McKinnon Primary School and the level of reasonable adjustment provided for them. Since 2015, all schools have participated annually in this national data collection.

FAQ sheet for parents is available on COMPASS under the school resources tab in the parent resources folder.

Enjoy the weekend,
