This week I was fortunate enough to attend the Victorian Schools Musical Festival where our stage band performed. The stage band sounded terrific with Robert Minshull supporting with his conducting skills. A great experience all round with many parents there to support the students.

For the past four Fridays, we have welcomed our youngest and newest members of the McKinnon PS community into our classrooms to experience their first transition sessions and get their first taste of being at school.  With many bright-eyed smiling, happy, laughing, and sometimes puzzled new faces, the Foundation classrooms have certainly been an exciting and buzzing place to be! Year Five students have also been very involved and have helped to make these sessions welcoming, supportive and successful.

The parents of these youngsters have also been transitioning into McKinnon with many valuable presentations geared at starting school including sessions with the Principal, School Council President, English Leader, Maths Leader and behaviour management expert Jenny Mckay.

We would like to extend a big thank you to all the students, teachers and parents involved in making the Foundation transition such a success so far.

This week many of our staff participated in a fantastic professional learning session conducted by reading guru David Hornsby. David was with the Victorian Ministry of Education for 28 years and also lectured at La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne and RMIT University.

David encouraged staff to have fun with rhymes, playing with words and writing meaningful texts and about the importance of using rich literature to engage students. He also reminded us that ‘laughing students learn’ referring to many highly engaging stories that hook our children into what we are learning about. He stated over and over that students learn through ‘Literature, Literature, and more Literature!

Note to Parents – If you are reading this please go straight to your personal, local or school library and select an amazing book to read your children right now!

Last Saturday saw over 25 parents and carers participate in our Term Four working bee. The school is very grateful for assistance (we couldn’t do it without you). There were many jobs completed on the day including; new roofs for the huts in Adventure Island, 20 cubic meters of sand added to Fort McKinnon, lowering our two picnic tables, spreading softfall around our playgrounds and tidying up of all our garden beds. Thanks to our School Council members Mark P, Mark H and Soeren L for their organisation and coordination on the day.

There have been several changes to our playground over the past fortnight. The new shade sail has been installed over the green playground on the eastern campus along with four new basketball backboards on our outside courts. These projects were completed by your generous donations at all our fundraising events this year, thank you again.

This year’s Twilight Market is set to make a splash with the staff at McKinnon PS. The DUNK TANK is returning. Staff have eagerly signed up to sit in the hot/wet seat at this year’s Twilight Market. PLEASE ENSURE you visit this attraction on a regular basis during the market and attempt to dunk a teacher. A roster will be placed next to the dunk tank so you can see when your favourite teacher is due to be DUNKED!! Good luck everyone.
