BOOK WEEK
Our school celebrations for Book Week 2020 got off to a great start last week. The school was decorated from the office area to the classrooms which made us all feel it was a special time. In the library we had a display of all of the shortlisted books which the school has purchased and children can now borrow. Thanks to the parents who donated monster puppets.
The books brought this year’s theme of ‘Wild Creatures, Wild Minds’ to life. Students made monster-related bookmarks and other crafts at lunchtime and enjoyed the comfy rugs and cushions for the ‘Booknic’ event. Each class received a specially wrapped book present on Monday to unpack and read together. We were interrupted each day at a different time for a ‘Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) activity (10 minutes of silent reading) which involved the whole school from Ms. Eirth to our youngest Foundies. However, the highlight of the week was the Book Week Dress Up Day. There were many staff dressed up as Where’s Wally characters and the students looked amazing as you can see below. Thank you to staff, parents and students for making this such a great celebration of reading.
NAIDOC WEEK
This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. Classes have had a particular focus on connecting with Australian indigenous culture and history. The students engaged through our rich collection of picture, video and class activities. The SRC met at the end of the week to share and reflect on the significance of NAIDOC week and discuss how they would like to take action on their learning.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Thank you to the Year Six Captains, Rosie O’Brien, Alexander Katsabis and Nethra Mugilvannan, who led the school through our minute’s silence and recited the poem ‘On Flanders Fields’. The whole school stopped to reflect on the sacrifice of lives lost during war.
JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Junior Athletics Day was a huge hit this week, with all students enthusiastically engaged in the activities. A big thank you to Dylan Hislop for organising the event.
ACCIDENTS HAPPEN
We would like to remind families that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents/carers of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs.
It is the responsibility of parents/carers to look into their preferred options for insurance/ambulance cover. The Department cannot provide advice to families on the purchase of individual student accident policy or ambulance cover.
Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.
This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property, students and staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.
2021 ENROLMENTS AND DEPARTURES
Have you got a foundation child you still need to enrol? Great news is that we are ready to accept that enrolment now, please contact the office as soon as possible.
If you are planning on leaving Mckinnon Primary in 2021, it would be greatly appreciated if you could notify the school as soon as possible.
SUNSMART
A reminder that our SunSmart policy commenced at the beginning of September. Students are asked to wear their SunSmart hats for all outdoor activities. We will be enforcing our ‘NO HAT NO PLAY’ policy during Term Four. Therefore, children are asked to bring their hats (making sure they’re clearly named).
