STUDENT LEADER BADGE PRESENTATION

It was an assembly of celebration this week as our Year Six student leaders and Student Representative Council received their badges. A big thank you to Nick Staikos MP who came along to share this special event. The school captains Audrey Kambouris, Etaash Jha, Emma Kumar and Minh Phan did a superb job outlining their commitment to leading the school on behalf of all our students with a particular focus on wellbeing and student voice.  It was a lovely celebration to be a part of and it was so nice to be able to welcome parents to the assembly to be a part of this event with their children. We look forward to all the amazing initiatives our student leaders will be involved in this year.

WELCOME BBQ – SUCCESS

Last week we held our first school event run by the Parents Club to a rousing success. It was fantastic to see so many members of our school community enjoying the sausages, ice cream, coffee, music and general atmosphere. A big thank you to Minh Dang for leading the organisation of the event and all of our other volunteers on the night for contributing to the success of the event. If you are interested in being involved in the next event our Parent Club meets and welcomes any new members.

2024 FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS – TWILIGHT SCHOOL TOURS

We are holding our first 2024 Foundation Information session on Tuesday 9th May at 6 pm, we are currently running tours every Wednesday morning. This session is an opportunity for parents to get a whole school perspective. The leaders of our school will be presenting a brief overview of the fantastic teaching and learning that takes place at MPS via a Twilight School Tour. Please pass on this information to any families in your area that may be interested. RSVP is essential through our online booking system.

NAPLAN

From March 13th to March 24th students in Years Three and Five participated in the annual NAPLAN test. These tests are nationwide and provide insight into student performance under strict testing conditions. Whilst we analyse the results of these tests to help build a picture of students in differing testing scenarios, we are very much aware that student learning evolves in varied ways for all students. At McKinnon PS we maintain a focus on holistic learning that represents the progress of the whole child over time. We offer a breadth and depth of curriculum that is not represented in the NAPLAN tests and we are constantly assessing student performance in a range of settings and curriculum areas.

Congratulations to our Year Three and Five students for completing their NAPLAN testing and thank you to everyone who has contributed to their learning journeys so far.

STORY DOG – VOLUNTEERS

We are excited to embark on a new school initiative that offers members of our school community the opportunity to bring their dogs into school and read with some of our students. This is run by a volunteer-based community group and is a fantastic initiative that has seen some success at many schools. We are in the beginning stages of this and at the moment are looking for any members of our school community that might have the time to regularly come into school with their dog and listen to students read. This might be a great opportunity to invite grandparents, relatives or family friends to come and be a part of the McKinnon Primary community. If you know someone that might be able to make this commitment and has a gorgeous dog please pass on the information.

STUDENT SAFETY AROUND OUR SCHOOL – BIKES AND SCOOTERS

We highly encourage children to walk/ride/scoot or be active on their way to school.  However, we are reminding all students to take extra care when riding their bikes or scooters near other children and members of our community in the streets around our school. Please encourage your child to ride very slowly or dismount when near others, particularly children who may be knocked over easily. Thank you so much for your support with this to ensure everyone’s safety.

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN

We would like to remind families that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents/carers of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs.

It is the responsibility of parents/carers to look into their preferred options for insurance/ambulance cover. The Department cannot provide advice to families on the purchase of individual student accident policy or ambulance cover.

Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.

This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property, students and staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.

Hope you all have a great weekend

Suzanne, David and Andrew
